Standing for a better, fairer, greener East

Vote #1 for Jonny Osborne

A better future for the East

I love Motukairangi/the Eastern Suburbs. I love its beaches, its predator-free bush, and its breweries. Its cafes, its coastline, and - most important of all - its communities.

Wellington’s East is great, but we know it could be better.

  • It could have a better transport network, where no matter who you are or how you choose to move about the city, you can get from A to B safely, efficiently and reliably.

  • It could have water infrastructure that works, is properly maintained and upgraded, and helps - not hurts - our environment.

  • It could have affordable housing so our teachers and tradies can find warm dry homes alongside their techie mates.

  • It could have restored forests where our native birds and critters can thrive in their predator-free homes.

I’m standing for council because I know better things are possible and I know if we get these things right our local economy will flourish, benefiting us all.

For a better, fairer and greener Motukairangi/East, Vote #1 for Jonny Osborne.

Priorities

Fix the pipes

We must continue to increase our investment to ensure Wellington has the water infrastructure it needs now and into the future. Any new regional water entity must hit the ground running, delivering solutions that will withstand the challenges of a changing climate while restoring the health of our water.

Transport solutions for all

I support investment in low-carbon modes of transport like walking, cycling and buses as they ensure viable options for getting around and reduce gridlock. Completing a second bus spine through the city centre and delivering peak-time bus priority changes through Rongotai and Kilbirnie will unlock faster, more reliable buses.

A greener East

The amazing efforts of our communities to rid much of the East from predators provides a fantastic opportunity to improve our environment. I want to see a significant increase in the amount of natives planted, better maintenance of our great walking tracks and and the development of a new city walk circling the Miramar Peninsula.

I pledge to work together with mana whenua and the community to deliver an enduring solution for Mātai Moana/Mt Crawford, which has the potential to become the jewel in the East’s crown.

Affordable housing

Let’s now realise the potential of changes to the District Plan this term allowing more housing. We can improve the affordability of homes, particularly for renters and first-home buyers – which Wellington desperately needs.

I will retain a keen focus on this and if the changes to the District Plan are not enough, I am open to other solutions, such as ramping up the council’s Te Kainga programme that is converting disused office space into affordable apartments.

About me

I came to Wellington twenty years ago to study, falling in love first with the city, then a few years later, my wife, before finally falling for Motukairangi/the Eastern Suburbs where we’ve been lucky to settle down and start raising our two kids.

I began my career as a lawyer before shifting into the public service, where I spent several years leading policy responses to some of our most challenging environmental issues.

I represented our community on Te Whaitua o Te Whanganui-a-Tara, working with mana whenua and councillors to develop a plan to restore the health of our region’s freshwater and coastal environments.

After taking some time out as a stay-at-home dad, I returned to the public service in 2024, this time focusing on social welfare issues.

I love my sport, having played cricket and football for many, many seasons, and now I help to coach my kids’ sports teams. I’m a keen gardener, and have been involved with a local native planting group in Miramar for several years.
